Play As Practice: Part I of The Play Trilogy

What if play isn’t something we grow out of—
but something we’re meant to grow into?
Not a frivolous escape, but a sacred return.
During a recent prenatal class, I paused to ask:
What are you looking forward to with your baby?
It was a simple question, but what followed was profound.
Many students—especially those early in pregnancy or walking tender, uncertain paths—couldn’t yet picture that future.
They weren’t imagining forward. They were inhabiting now.
Rooted. Raw. Present.
And that’s a beautiful, brave place to be.
So instead of stretching our attention toward the future, I offered something else:
An invitation to sink into the moment.
To meet what is.
To practice something not just for pregnancy or postpartum, but for the wild ride of being human:
The practice of play.
So often, especially in our adult lives, we approach movement and mindfulness as something to achieve.
We show up to “do the work.”
To prepare.
To fix.
To get stronger, more flexible, more ready.
But what if we loosened that grip?
What if our practice wasn’t just productive, but pleasurable?
What if it was playful?
Play is presence. It’s what happens when we allow ourselves to move, breathe, explore—for no other reason than the joy of being in a body. And yes, sometimes that joy is laced with discomfort or complexity, especially when we’re navigating big transitions like pregnancy, postpartum, aging, injury, or simply being a sensitive soul in a fast-moving world.
But it’s still available.
Always.
Water is the element of play.
It flows through the hips, pelvis, and thighs—the deep riverbeds of our sensual and creative selves.
When we rock, spiral, and undulate—like a slow, exploratory Cat/Cow—we’re not just moving.
We’re remembering.
We’re soothing our nervous systems with a language older than words.
We’re accessing something instinctual—something wise.
And whether you’re birthing a baby, a vision, or a new version of you—
this water knows the way.
Because the truth is:
we’re always becoming.
If you'd like to try this in your body, here’s a simple, fluid invitation:
Standing Ocean Waves → Ujjayi Breath → Hip Circles
Let the rhythm find you.
Begin to breathe with a soft Ujjayi breath—oceanic and steady.
Let your movement begin to flow more intuitively.
Allow the pelvic bowl to tilt slightly forward as your knees bend and your inner thighs spiral gently back and wide.
Feel the groins soften and deepen, inviting a more fluid connection through your hips and lower belly.
As your body warms, explore hip circles or soft infinity loops—tracing space, stirring sensation, moving like water.
Let it all become one continuous flow—
breath, wave, spiral.
A meditation. A remembering. A return.
This is Part I of The Play Trilogy—a series of reflections on how we move through the world with softness, curiosity, and joy.
Whether you’re pregnant or not, birthing or not, parenting or not—this is for you.
Because your body is wise.
Your breath is ready.
And your inner child is still here, waiting for an invitation to dance.
So today, maybe the invitation is simple:
Move like water.
Play like a child.
Breathe like the whole ocean is inside you.
Not to get somewhere.
But to remember you're already home.
Here. In your body. In your breath.
Alive.
