How to Make Space When Life is Wild

Angela Burgess | JUN 1, 2023

I've been thinking a lot about SPACE. Last week I took my 1 year old on a solo vacation to the beach with my dad and stepmom. Just the word "vacation" gives off vibes of space and relaxation. The funny thing is that since I was the sole parent of my darling daughter (who wasn't too keen on having me anywhere out of her sight), vacation was a lot of work. The space I created for vacation by clearing my schedule of obligations was quickly filled with around the clock vigilance of my daughter in a new environment with many beautiful moments, but also many hazards.

This kind of living was truly wild. I had no control over the elements. I found myself busy trying to keep my head above water (and my daughter's too!). I didn't have time for my regular yoga practice or usual routines. My anchor was lifted and I was adrift upon the wild oceanic currents and tides. I can't say that I was especially successful in navigating everything that came my way, but I did lean into the water element as my North Star and that seemed to help me hold space for my experience.

I began to lean into the the challenge and use the energies of Divine Play to help me ride the waves with Skillful Action. I opened myself to the experience. I remembered my center and my "why" for deciding to go on this vacation. I breathed deeply and rode the waves of work and emotion as they came and shifted. I rooted into my power as a Strong & Capable Mama and from this place of full connection I was able to expand more fully into my desire for Divine Play with my family.

And you know what? By holding space for my experience with all the elements as allies, I was able to receive my vacation. It may not have looked like what I was hoping for, but I was open enough to receive the vacation that WAS there for me. If I had held on too tightly to my expectations, I would have missed the ocean for the waves.

This kind of wild living takes courage and awareness. I invite you to notice what you have resistance to in the moment and then lean in even deeper. Which element feels out of balance? Lean in here and then use all of the elements to support your experience. This too is yoga. In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna says "Yoga is skill in action." May you have the courage to show up for your life with this kind of mindful presence and the skill to navigate toward your North Star.

In the way of community and support, I'd love to connect and practice with you on the mat.
