Cultivating Equanimity in Pregnancy & Postpartum: Finding Balance in the Journey

The journey through pregnancy and postpartum is one filled with changes—physical, emotional, and spiritual. Amidst the joy and transformation, it's common to feel moments of overwhelm or uncertainty. That’s where cultivating equanimity comes in—a practice of finding balance, calm, and presence, no matter what comes your way.
In my classes, I focus on helping birthing people and new parents tap into their inner strength and stability. Here are some simple ways to cultivate equanimity during pregnancy and postpartum.
Breathing is one of the quickest ways to center yourself, especially in moments of stress or overwhelm. By practicing mindful breathing, you can calm your nervous system, clear your mind, and reconnect with the present moment.
How to Practice: Try inhaling for 4 counts and exhaling for 6 counts. Use this simple breathing technique during feeding sessions, while holding your baby, or whenever you need a reset.
Movement helps release physical tension and emotional stress, while gently reconnecting with your body during and after pregnancy. Restorative poses, like Child's Pose or Reclined Bound Angle Pose, are especially effective for grounding and soothing the nervous system.
How to Practice: Set aside a few minutes each day to move mindfully, without judgment. You can use these poses in your daily routine or as part of a yoga practice to find stillness and balance.
Gratitude has the power to shift our perspective from what’s lacking to what’s abundant. By reflecting on things you’re grateful for, you can bring more light and positivity into even the most challenging days.
How to Practice: At the end of each day, write down or mentally reflect on three things you’re grateful for—whether it’s a quiet moment, a small act of kindness, or the warmth of your baby’s touch.
In the postpartum period, rest is essential, yet often hard to come by. Equanimity comes from recognizing that it’s okay to ask for help, and it’s okay to take time for yourself to recharge.
How to Practice: Nap when you can, accept help when it’s offered, and take even small moments to rest. Remember that taking care of yourself allows you to better care for your baby.
The pregnancy & postpartum periods are unpredictable and full of ups and downs. Letting go of the expectation to "do it all" perfectly can bring more peace into your experience as a parent. Instead, embrace the flow of each day and give yourself permission to be flexible.
How to Practice: When things don’t go as planned, take a deep breath and remind yourself that it's okay to adjust. Embrace the present moment, knowing that you are enough just as you are.
